"Arghhh!!! My Target Caught me!"

Picture

Unfortunately, there are times that even the best investigator conducting surveillance is caught by their target. What do you do?

  • Don't get in a conflict with the target - Leave, walk away, don't try to confront the target or stand your ground. You may feel your expertise is threatened but don't try to stand your ground. This will only make it worse, potentially impacting your client. Keep your ego in check and simply walk away, don't make any comments and leave the area.
  • Notify your client - It may be the hardest thing you have to do but in keeping with protecting the best interest of your client you need to be upfront and notify them as soon as possible.
  • Conduct an after action review - Embarrassing? Sure, but spend some time looking at your mistakes. Don't try to explain away the errors. Take a honest look at how your target made you. Learn from your mistakes.

Getting caught by your target is never something you want to happen. It will happen to you one day.  Be prepared for when it does.

Private Investigator Equipment

Private investigators are only as good as their equipment. It is important to find the right vendor that caters to the private detective and private investigator needs. Equipment for the private investigator ranges from covert camera/video/audio recorders to latest tablet to assist in documenting the current case and keeping up with appointments.

Covert Cameras - You will need a variety of cameras for various applications. Begin building your inventory slowly. The primary challenge with any video investigation will be power. There are stand-alone camera units that utilize batteries but you will find that time is your biggest limitation.

Cameras that use existing power outlets overcome the time limitation but you will find they are more difficult to use in settings where the target of your investigation is familiar with their surroundings such as their office.

Surveillance vehicles - if you expect your targets to be mobile or you will need to "stake-out" your target near their home or place of business, converting a vehicle to a surveillance platform is necessary. Using window tint, creating an environment where you can be hidden inside is necessary. Comfort is another element you will need to consider for long stake-outs.

Privacy issues- If you are looking do conduct your own private investigation, make sure you familiarize yourself with all of the applicable privacy laws so you don't become the one being investigated. The information you might gain from using equipment might get you in trouble, may not be allowed to be used in court or worse, could land you in jail!

Following are listings of various privacy laws but you should check with legal counsel, a private detective or private investigator before any purchase or use.
