First you need to have a web presence. Years ago having a business website was not that critical. Today it is critical. Having a website increases your marketing visibility. Business websites have become common place for businesses, so much so, that many interested clients will search the web for you before they consider doing business. Developing a basic, non-flashy website is one of the basic private investigator firm elements required to build business. Second, being involved in the community, becoming a member of your local chamber of commerce and other charity organizations will increase your visibility in the local community.
Third, consider sponsoring a little league baseball team to further increase your exposure in the community. Private investigative firms often fail to take advantage of local advertising opportunities by supporting local teams. You never know if one of the team members parents will be an executive in a firm looking for investigative services! Fourth, consider providing services for local media. In exchange for some free on-the-air advertising that would include a link to your website can be a great way to reach a larger audience. Fifth, help other private investigative firms out-of-state get business. When you are approached by a client that has needs beyond your reach, don't hesitate to offer to refer them to an out-of-state firm that can meet their needs.
